I know it’s already mid-September…but who doesn’t like listening to summer songs all year round? I know I do. Ironically not all of these songs were actually released in the summer but they all represent beaches, babes, dance parties, and everything tropical. Here are five of the best summer-y jams to listen to all year long.
5) “You Were Right” - RÜFÜS DU SOL
Australian electro house trio RÜFÜS DU SOL (also known as RÜFÜS) released this track earlier this year and I’ve had it on repeat ever since. This is the first single off their sophomore album and similar to Kygo, it falls in the “tropical house” category. The vocals, minor synth chords, and strong bassline create the perfect pop dance summer jam. They’re currently touring so be sure to catch them if you can.
4) “Stole The Show” – Kygo
Let’s be real – how can I have a summer track list without Kygo? He is the epitome of summertime. He’s a 24-year-old Norwegian DJ, producer, and talented pianist whose genre is literally called “tropical house.” This song features vocals from Parson James, an up and coming artist who describes his sound as “pop gospel.” James’s voice and Kygo’s beats sounds like something that would be playing at a pool party in Las Vegas (aka a year round party).
3) After Hours” – Adam Lambert
I remember watching Adam Lambert when he was auditioning and performing on American Idol and rooting for him to win (he didn’t). That obviously didn’t stop him – he’s become a household name with 3 top albums. This song isn’t what I expected from this pop rocker but it works. His powerhouse voice goes perfectly with the soothing beats on this track. I’m surprised this song only made it onto the album as a bonus track but regardless it looks like Lambert is trying to explore his R&B side and I dig it.
2) “Dragonfly” – Malinchak feat. MAX
In case you don’t know who the talented Malinchak (who went previously by his full name, Chris Malinchak) is, you will soon. He’s an American DJ/producer/songwriter hailing from NYC. He’s released several hit singles like “Good To Me” and “Stranger,” featuring some other favorite artists of mine, Mnek and Mikky Ekko, respectively. This sexy R&B track came out earlier this year in May and features vocals from MAX, a young newcomer with a hell of a voice. “Dragonfly” is less nu disco then his other tracks but it’s still one of the grooviest summer songs.
1) “Lose Control” – Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique
I should preface this one – I LOVE ROBYN. I have loved her since I saw her perform her single “Show Me Love,” on the Nickalodeon show “All That.” Yep, I just went there…I’m a true 90’s kid. Robyn, her keyboardist Markus Jägerstedt, and the late producer Christian Falk formed this group and their five song EP was released this past August. This song sounds a lot like Robyn’s tracks from her 2010 album, “Body Talk,” but you can definitely hear Falk’s influence on this track. It’s a great blend of the two and I hope it’s playing in clubs all over Europe.
